•• * Фраза из статьи в New York Times лишний раз напомнила о том, что в двуязычных словарях, да и в большинстве толковых, очень неполно (а стало быть с искажением его смысловой структуры) дается слово to unravel:
•• One of the few successful post-9/11 terror prosecutions – a case in Detroit – seems to be unraveling.
•• Очевидно, что это ближе всего к словосочетанию, которое нередко встречается в наших СМИ: дело разваливается/рассыпается. По той же модели – словосочетание negotiations unraveled:
•• Nearly five years of negotiations unraveled in June for reasons still being hotly debated – the post-Sept. 11 chill, U.S. policy in the Middle East and squabbles over profit margins. (Washington Post) - Длившиеся почти пять лет переговоры закончились провалом/ни к чему не привели или Почти пять лет переговоров пошли прахом.
•• Переводы слова to unravel в двуязычных словарях (ABBYY Lingvo, БАРС) вряд ли могут удовлетворить переводчика. Это варианты (распутывать, выявлять, обнаруживать, открывать, разоблачать, разгадывать), которые в данном случае скорее могут увести его в сторону.
•• Кстати, встречающееся в аналогичных контекстах русское словосочетание развалить дело лучше всего передается как to ruin the case, хотя возможны и другие варианты – например, to scuttle the investigation (здесь сильнее подчеркивается преднамеренность развала).
•• Пример из сообщения агентства Reuters, где обращает на себя внимание значение слова case, отличающееся от его значения в первом примере:
•• Menzies Campbell, foreign affairs spokesman for Britain smaller opposition Liberal Democrats, said Powell’s comments were further evidence that the intelligence case for the war was “ unravelling” (сохраняю британскую орфографию с двумя l, на которую реагирует майкрософтовский «редактор»). – <...> высказывания Пауэлла еще раз свидетельствуют о том, что основанная на данных разведки аргументация в пользу войны рассыпается или данные разведки, на которых основывались аргументы в пользу войны, оказываются несостоятельными.
•• Еще одно вполне устоявшееся в английском языке и не отмеченное в двуязычных словарях значение глагола to unravel – выйти из-под контроля. Можно ли его считать оттенком значения,
•• указанного в предыдущем сообщении, – развалиться, рухнуть? Вопрос для меня открытый. Вот пример из сообщения агентства Associated Press:
•• Pena said if the situation in Iraq unravels, “the U.S. military will be faced with its own version of the Israeli occupation of the West Bank, where military action to suppress the insurgency creates more new insurgents – and an endless cycle of violence.” – <...> если ситуация в Ираке выйдет из-под контроля...
