= OSоперационная система, ОСсистемное ПО, являющееся средой, в которой исполняются все приложения и системные программы. Задача ОС - сделать работу с компьютером более удобной, а использование оборудования - эффективным. ОС часто рассматривается как слой ПО, лежащий между аппаратурой компьютера и прикладными программами. С помощью набора системных вызовов (API) предоставляет программам доступ к устройствам компьютера и услугам самой ОС. Среди многочисленных функций ОС - управление диспетчеризацией задач (процессов), распределением ресурсов (resource), обработкой прерываний, вводом-выводом, интерфейсом пользователя, файловой и другими системами. Таким образом, компьютер работает под управлением ОС, однако при начальном запуске, отладке и тестировании он может работать под управлением встроенного ПО, именуемого монитором (monitor) или базовой системой ввода-вывода (см. BIOS). ОС делятся на однопользовательские и многопользовательские, однозадачные и многозадачные, реального времени (real-time system) и с разделением времени (time sharing), сетевые (NOS) и распределённые (DNOS), общего назначения и специализированные. При этом не уточняется, в каком виде представлены программы (в исходных текстах или в исполняемом коде). ПО делится на два больших класса - системное (system software) и прикладное ПО (см. application). К системному относится любое ПО, необходимое для разработки и исполнения программ, в частности операционные системы (operating system), компиляторы (compiler), отладчики и т. д. Примером прикладных программ могут служить программы бухгалтерского учёта, обучающие программы, компьютерные игры, САПР и т. д. Программы, хранящиеся в энергонезависимой памяти (ПЗУ, ППЗУ), обычно называются firmware. По способу распространения ПО делится на бесплатное (freeware), условно-бесплатное (shareware) и коммерческое. Кроме того, ПО можно разделить на массовое (распространяемое через Интернет и коробочное) и заказное.
