Музыкальный жанр, родившийся из негритянских молитвенных песнопений (госпел [gospel (music)]) и вобравший в себя элементы ритм-энд-блюза [ rhythm and blues]: весьма эмоциональный, задушевный и энергичный хоровой стиль с ритмичным инструментальным сопровождением. Возник в конце 1940-х. Самыми известными исполнителями соула были Дж. Браун [Brown, James] (особенно песня "Пожалуйста, пожалуйста" ["Please, Please, Please"] (1956)) и Рей Чарлз [ Charles, Ray], который первым познакомил с музыкой соул широкую аудиторию ("Что сказать?" ["What'd I Say?"] (1959)). В 1960-х известнейшими исполнителями соула были группа "Мотаун" [Motown group] и А. Франклин [Franklin, Aretha], а также О. Реддинг [Redding, Otis] и С.
