       Nacido en Filadelfia, la separacion de sus padres le llevo a pasar las primeras etapas de su vida en compania de su madre y de su hermano Irving, que con el tiempo seria un reputado fotografo. Despues de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, intenta la aventura teatral en la compania de Joshua Logan. Toma la decision de adquirir una formacion rigurosa, lo que le hace interrumpir su actividad teatral y estudiar en el Black Mountain College, en Carolina del Norte, y, mas tarde, en las universidades de Perugia y Florencia. En 1948 pasa por el Actor’s Studio hasta que consigue introducirse en la cadena de television NBC, en trabajos subalternos. Pronto escribe guiones y dirige. Obtiene un gran exito en 1956 con la obra The Miracle Worker, que para el sera una especie de talisman, ya que volvio a dirigirla en Broadway en 1959 y en cine en 1962.
       Abiertas las puertas de este medio, dirige su primera pelicula, que sera tambien su primer western, El zurdo, que dio a conocer a un director que tenia mucho que decir en la pantalla grande. El Milagro de Ana Sullivan (The Miracle Worker, 1962), La jauria humana (The Chase, 1966) y Bonnie and Clyde (1967) certificaron el valor intrinseco del cineasta, que logro nuevos parabienes con su segundo e iconoclasta western, Pequeno gran hombre. A mi juicio, Arthur Penn es autor de una obra coherente, de notable valor aunque con algunos altibajos. Hoy, sin embargo, parece algo olvidado, por lo que parece oportuno resenar que sus peliculas, y en particular sus tres westerns, forman parte de lo mas granado de la produccion norteamericana “postclasica”, esa que empieza a abrirse camino desde los ultimos anos 50.
