abbr. FinFederal National Mortgage Association: the largest source of housing finance in the United States, the FNMA trades in mortgages guaranteed by the Federal Housing Finance Board. Created in 1938, the FNMA is a shareholder-owned private company and its stock is traded on the New York Stock Exchange. It has two principal regulators; the Department for Housing and Urban Development (HUD) aims to make sure that liquidity in the residential mortgage finance market is increased, while the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight (OFHEO) monitors soundness of accounting practice and financial safety. -
