Создано в мае 1862, став восьмым по счету министерством в США. Возглавляется министром сельского хозяйства [ Secretary of Agriculture], назначаемым Президентом США "по совету и с согласия" [ advice and consent] Сената [ Senate, U.S.] и являющимся членом кабинета министров [ cabinet].
