Un octet est un groupe de 8 bits représentant soit un caractère alphabétique, soit quelques points formant une image. Cette unité de mesure est utilisée pour mesurer la capacité d’une unité de stockage (fichier informatique, mémoire de l’ordinateur, disquette, disque dur, DVD, etc.), à savoir la quantité d’informations que cette unité contient ou peut contenir. Cette capacité se mesure en kilo-octets (Ko), mégaoctets (Mo), gigaoctets (Go), exaoctets (Eo) et téraoctets (To), tous multiples de 1.024. Un kilo-octet (Ko) représente un peu plus de mille octets (1.024 octets). Un mégaoctet (Mo) représente 1.024 Ko, soit un peu plus d’un million d’octets (très précisément 1.048.576 octets). Un gigaoctet (Go) représente 1.024 Mo, soit un peu plus d’un milliard d’octets (très précisément 1.073.741.824 octets). Un exaoctet (Eo) représente 1.024 Go. Un téraoctet (To) représente 1.024 Eo. -
