Ореховый. Разговорное слово, означающее эксцентричный, сумасшедший, ненормальный. Оно стало употребляться в этом значении в США с конца XIX в. Эксцентричный человек может быть назван просто nut или nutter, или даже fruitcake. My teachers always thought I was a bit nutty. — Мои учителя всегда считали меня немного странным. -

NUTS (NUTBALL, NUTCAKE)придурок (см. FRUITCAKE). Ассоциация здесь не с современным значением "орех" ( nut), а со старым британским - "голова".Nuts (to be), a nut case, to be just plain nuts, to be nutty — быть вот этим самым придурком.
В то же время есть и совсем другой куст значений: (*)nuts = balls в смысле общеизвестного предмета мужской гордости (яйца).Не спутайте в ином контексте.(*)
Nut-crunching=ball-busting — популярная угроза, которую каждый нормальный русский обещает осуществить по отношению к врагу в момент озлобления. Оказывается и в Штатах грозят похоже.
