Nota d'usoEntrambi i sostantivi arms e weapons possono essere tradotti in italiano con “armi”, ma possiedono diverse sfumature di significato. Arms viene usato esclusivamente al plurale e in ambito militare, specialmente quando si tratta di muovere guerra: a call to arms, chiamata alle armi; arms race, corsa alle armi. Weapon ha un significato più generico e può essere utilizzato sia in relazione alle armi vere e proprie, che a qualsiasi oggetto usato per assalire o ferire qualcuno: The robber's weapon was a hatchet, l'arma del rapinatore era un'accetta (non The robber's arm was a hatchet). Esistono tuttavia locuzioni fisse con weapon che si riferiscono alla guerra vera e propria, come weapons of mass destruction, armi di distruzione di massa e nuclear weapons, armi nucleari.
