Следующие существительные имеют нерегулярные формы множественного числа: man - men; woman - women; child - children; ox - oxen; foot - feet; tooth - teeth; goose - geese; mouse - mice; louse - lice. (2.) Ряд заимствованных существительных сохраняют форму множественного числа того языка, из которого они пришли: analysis - analyses; appendix - appendices; hypothesis - hypotheses; index - indexes; crisis - crises; criterion - criteria; phenomenon - phenomena; sanatorium - sanatoria; symposium - symposia; stimulus - stimuli; cactus - cacti. (3.) Некоторые существительные английского языка имеют только форму множественного числа. К таким существительным относятся: (а.) названия предметов одежды: jeans, shorts, panties, trousers, tights - они согласуются с глаголом в форме множественного числа (совпадает с формами их эквивалентов в русском языке); (б) названия некоторых игр: cards, draughts, billiards, dominoes - они согласуются с глаголом в единственном числе (русские эквиваленты billiards - биллиард и dominoes - домино имеюют форму единственного числа, а карты, дартс/дротики - форму множественного числа, но и те и другие сочетаются с глаголом в единственном числе); (в) существительные clothes, contents, wages, goods согласуются с глаголом во множественном числе (их русские эквиваленты - одежда, содержание, зарплата имеют форму единственного числа и согласуются с глаголом единственного числа, goods - товар/товары согласуется с глаголом в зависимости от формы существительного); (г) названия овощей: beans, peas, carrots, potatoes, beets, onions согласуются с глаголом во множественном числе (их русские эквиваленты имеют форму единственного числа - фасоль, горох и т. д., и согласуются с глаголом единственного числа); (д) названия ряда национальностей: the Spaniards, the Russians, the Poles согласуются с глаголом во множественном числе (совпадает с употреблением их русских эквивалентов); (е) существительные means, headquarters, crossroads могут согласовываться с глаголом как в единственном, так и во множественном числе (headquarters is/are) (их русские эквиваленты имеют форму единственного числа - средство, штабквартира, перекресток и согласуются с глаголом в единственном числе); (ж) существительное news согласуется с глаголом только в единственном числе (news is) (его русский эквивалент имеет две формы - новость, новости - и соответственно согласуется с глаголом либо единственного, либо множественного числа). -
