(franz. = Verzierungen), ab 16. Jh. in der französischen Musik Name für Abbreviaturen. Mit ihnen werden Verzierungen und Variierungen einer Melodie vermerkt. Jeder Komponist hatte seine eigene Gewohnheit für die Notation, so dass der Ausführende eine gründliche Kenntnis der alten Technik besitzen sollte. Der 'Geschmack' der Zeit muss nachgefühlt werden und der Künstler muss gut improvisieren können, dies gilt besonders für Lautenspieler, denn die Komponisten dieser Musik hattten als erstes ihr ganz eigenes System der agréments. Im 17. und 18. Jh. haben Musiktheoretiker versucht, die Verzierungstechniken zu katalogisieren, konnten jedoch keine allgemeinverbindlichen Regeln aufgestellen. Sie legen jedoch Wert auf die Behauptung, dass agréments nicht nur bloße Verzierung, sondern immer Teil des musikalischen Ausdrucks sein sollten.
