Poderoso realizador en el periodo mudo, su inspiracion fue descendiendo a medida que el cine sonoro ganaba capacidad de expresion, lo que no fue obice para que sus peliculas resultaran siempre muy populares. Desmedido, por lo habitual, en la extension de sus largometrajes, a Cecil B. 1889-1969Enormemente fecundo, este especialista del western (rodo un centenar, entre mudos y sonoros) no desdeno acercarse a otros generos. El resultado es un centenar y medio sobrado de peliculas, en las que no faltan detalles de buen hacer, aunque el ex ceso sumerge el todo en la atonia. Se hizo director con Thomas Ince y logro algun western mudo de buen nivel, como The Narrow Trail (1917), con Wil liam S. Hart, para quien siempre fue su director favorito, co mo protagonista.
