Аккумулирует сбережения населения, финансирует жилищное строительство; вклады страхуются Федеральной корпорацией страхования депозитов [ Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation]. Первая ассоциация такого типа - Оксфордская строительная ассоциация взаимного страхования [Oxford Provident Building Association] - была создана в 1831 в г. Филадельфии. Особенно много ассоциаций было создано после Гражданской войны [ Civil War] и к 1893 их число достигло 5,8 тысяч. Обычно они назывались "строительно-ссудными ассоциациями" [building and loan association], в Новой Англии [ New England] они были известны как "кооперативные банки" [co-operative bank], в Луизиане - как "ассоциации гомстедов" [homestead association]. Современное название стало широко использоваться в 1930-е.
