В наши дни это чувство пропало. Но иногда оно возвращается, словно призрак. Как в случае с этой настоящей и сильной мелодрамой, не стесняющейся зваться таковой. Джек Николсон не может сравниться с Фондой, Купером и т. д., но раз в 20 лет он достигает их уровня, как в этом фильме и в Над кукушкиным гнездом, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, и тогда его игра приобретает силу и искренность и в нем появляется что-то от персонажей Гюго. Мерил Стрип великолепна, когда в своеобразной молитве подводит итог своей жизни и говорит: «По крайней мере, я никого не предала». Железный бурьян провалился в прокате, был встречен даже насмешками (дошло до того, что Бабенко ставили в упрек его виртуозность и восхитительные планы, снятые с крана), однако это один из тех немногих американских фильмов 80-х гг., которые можно рекомендовать к просмотру.
