Телевизионная программа 'The Triumph of the Nerds' («Победа нёрдов») познакомила телезрителей со словом nerd. Многие услышали его впервые. Nerd — это в какой-то степени anorak (о котором я уже написал), т. е. очень скучный человек, которого не стоит приглашать на вечер. Характеристика nerd: слепая преданность науке (в телевизионной программе — компьютерной), тесный ряд разноцветных ручек и карандашей в нагрудном кармане пиджака, совершенное незнание правил поведения в обществе. Слово nerd употребляется в американском жаргоне с 1960-х гг., и от него образовался целый ряд прилагательных: nerdish, nerdlike, nerdy, а также имена существительные: nerdishness и nerdism. Встречаются выражения the nerd look (внешность нёрда) и the nerd pack (шайка нёрдов). Предполагается, что это искажение слова turd (какашка, дерьмо, а также подонок). -
