сокр FBIПодразделение Министерства юстиции США [ Department of Justice, U.S.]. Создано в 1908 под названием Бюро расследований [Bureau of Investigation], современное название с 1935. Занимается расследованием нарушений федеральных законов (кроме тех, контроль за которыми возложен на другие агентства), а также ведет контрразведывательную деятельность. На бюро также возложена борьба с коррупцией и организованной преступностью. Оказывает информационные услуги другим правоохранительным органам через Национальный центр информации о преступлениях и преступниках [National Crime Information Center], а также экспертные и лабораторные услуги, проводит обучение офицеров полиции [FBI National Academy]. Во главе ФБР стоит директор [Director], назначаемый президентом США с согласия Сената. История ФБР тесно связана с именем Эдгара Гувера [ Hoover, (John) Edgar], директора ФБР в 1924-72, который уже в 1924 создал основы его современной структуры. В годы маккартизма [ McCarthy Era] ФБР выступило в несвойственной ему роли тайной политической полиции. Штаб-квартира в г. Вашингтоне [ J. Edgar Hoover Building]. Имеет около 60 подразделений в крупных городах и более 500 местных отделений.
