К концу финансового 1990 г. национальный долг Великобритании составлял 192,6 млрд ф. ст., из которых 6,7 млрд ф. ст. приходилось на нестерлинговую задолженность и 185,9 млрд ф. ст. - на стерлинговую задолженность. Нестерлинговый долг имеет важное значение, поскольку выплата процентов по нему отрицательно влияет на платежный баланс (balance of payments) страны. Управлением национальным долгом, которое может быть важным аспектом денежно-кредитной политики правительства, занимаются уполномоченные по национальному долгу (National Debt Commissioners) Банка Англии.
