    (из лондонского сатирического листка времён отступления Наполеона из России) General Frost [Winter] (durch ein englisches satirisches Blatt zur Zeit des Rückzugs Napoleons aus Russland in Umlauf gekommen). Im Dezember 1812 erschien in London eine Karikatur auf Napoleon, auf der dieser "von dem General Frost rasiert", d. h. dem harten russischen Winter unterliegend, dargestellt war. Große Verbreitung fand der Ausdruck während des Großen Vaterländischen Krieges, als die faschistische Propaganda, um den durch die vielen Niederlagen gesunkenen Kampfgeist der deutschen Truppen zu heben, den Soldaten der Wehrmacht weismachen wollte, die einzige reale Kraft der Sowjetarmee seien "General Frost" bzw. "General Winter".

Der Dichter schildert darin die Schlacht bei Borodino, einem Dorf westlich von Moskau, die der Oberbefehlshaber der russischen Armee M. Kutusow am 16. August 1812 Napoleon lieferte und in der die französischen Truppen entscheidend geschwächt wurden. Die Erzählung über die Schlacht legt Lermontow einem ihrer Teilnehmer in den Mund, einem alten russischen Soldaten, was ihr den Reiz eines im volkstümlichen Ton vorgetragenen Augenzeugenberichts verleiht. Ein weiteres Anliegen des Dichters bestand darin, die durch die politische Reaktion der 30er Jahre erzwungene Untätigkeit seiner Generation zu beklagen. Zitiert wird meist nur die erste Zeile. Der Sinn des Zitats: Unsere Generation hat tüchtigere und interessantere Menschen vorzuweisen als die eurige, d. h. die jüngere.

    (французская народная песня начала XVIII в.) Marlbruk zog aus zum Kriege (scherzhaftes französisches Volkslied, gegen den Herzog Marlborough gerichtet, einen englischen Feldherrn, der im Spanischen Erbfolgekrieg (1700-1714) eine Reihe von Siegen über die französischen Truppen davontrug). Ende des 18. Jh. wurde das Lied, in dem der Name des Herzogs die entstellte Form Marlbrouk annahm, über die Grenzen Frankreichs hinaus, u. a. in Deutschland, bekannt, kam auch nach Russland und fand hier 1812, während des Vaterländischen Krieges, große Verbreitung. Die russische Fassung behielt zwar den Namen Мальбру́к, spielte aber unzweideutig auf Napoleon und dessen misslungenen Feldzug gegen Russland an. Auf russischem Boden wurde das Lied zu einem recht derben Soldatencouplet, in dem ein Möchtegern-Feldherr aus Angst vor dem Feinde eine Magenverstimmung bekommt und daran stirbt. Der Ausdruck wird als ironische Charakteristik eines Menschen gebraucht, der sich bei einem Unternehmen blamiert hat.
