Ещё одно значение слова nail, пришедшее из Средних веков, — это неглубокая чаша на подставке или на ножке. Торговые сделки осуществлялись простым путём — деньги клали в такую чашу на подставке. Возможно, форма чаши, напоминающая гвоздь, и явилась причиной рождения этого выражения. Отсюда to pay on the nail — расплатиться немедленно. В Бристоле, рядом с Corn Exchange (Хлебная биржа), такой «гвоздь» представлен в форме четырёх маленьких бронзовых колонн. Говорили, что если покупатель был доволен качеством зерна, продаваемого там (on the nail), он платил сразу. -
