Именно история дружбы больше всего привлекает его внимание. Показателен тот факт, насколько Дуон изменил рассказ Брета Харта. Из биполярного сюжета о бессовестном игроке, обирающем партнера, он сделал лирическую и контрастную притчу о судьбе людей с разными характерами и нравственными убеждениями, которых объединяет судьбоносная дружба. Вместо того чтобы противопоставлять и осуждать их, Дуон старается показать, как деревенская наивность одного героя и разочарованный цинизм другого в драматичных обстоятельствах проявляют и умножают врожденную доброту обоих.
