Una de sus ultimas actuaciones, tan mo desta que ni siquiera figura en los titulos de credito, ocurre en La diligencia (Stagecoach, John Ford, 1939), una pelicula de referencia en el mundo del western. Hoy podriamos calificarlo como un realizador tipico del cine mudo, dicho esto en su acepcion menos favorable, es decir, la que implica que no se llego a adaptar al sonoro, en el que su carrera fue razonablemente breve y nada distinguida. En realidad, falta criterio para analizar su filmografia en el periodo mudo porque pocos de sus filmes de esa epoca han sobrevivido.
