       Sus origenes en el cine se situan dentro de la tarea de operador de camara y, despues, ayudante de direccion. Su carrera como director comienza realmente en 1936. Lesley Selander es uno de los grandes especialistas del western, con mas de cien peliculas a sus espaldas. Decir “uno de los grandes especialistas” no es lo mismo que decir “uno de los grandes nombres” y, en efecto, la trayectoria de Selander, en lo que a la calidad de sus peliculas se refiere, es irregular. Lo que, sin embargo, sorprende es que la valoracion media de sus westerns no es baja, lo que indica que el director poseia un especial instinto para el genero, que pone de manifiesto con una plastica mas que correcta y un buen manejo del tiempo de la narracion. Inabarcable por su extension, es dificil senalar los filmes que destacan en tan amplia muestra, pero si me veo en la obligacion de citar alguno, no dudaria en elegir las peliculas que hizo para Allied Artists a finales de los anos 40 y principios de los 50, y algunas otras de las ultimas que realizo, como Dakota Lil o The Broken Star.

    1914-1977
       Procedente de Broadway, donde llevo a cabo los mas dispares oficios, William Castle desembarca en Hollywood a los 23 anos, y seis mas tarde dirige su primera pelicula. Especialista en peliculas baratas de terror, de sarrollo diversos artilugios para el espectador, entre los que cabe citar la electrificacion de asientos para aumentar la tension en el espectador, y el diseno de esqueletos inflables que flotaban sobre la audiencia durante la proyeccion. No fue, a la vista de lo dicho, un especialista del western, pero rodo un punado de ellos, siempre con presupuestos ajustados y resultados artisticos mejores de lo que cabria suponer. En su curriculo hay que citar dos peliculas celebres, La dama de Shanghai (The Lady from Shanghai, Orson Welles,1947) y La semilla del diablo (Rosemary’s Ba by, Roman Polanski, 1968), de las que fue productor.

A destacar Sitting Bull, un acercamiento serio a la ba talla de Little Big Horn, parte destacada de la historia americana. Tambien, The Iron Sheriff y La gran matanza de los sioux.

       Ayudante de direccion en los 40, a finales de esta decada inicia su carrera como realizador de episodios de series de television. Se dice que dirigio mas de 1600 westerns, comedias, telefilmes de aventuras y cualquier otra cosa que caia en sus manos. Con esta actividad frenetica, no es de extranar que su trabajo para la gran pantalla no sea muy abundante, ni en cantidad ni en calidad, pese a lo cual dirige un punado de westerns de segunda fila, particularmente para Universal.

       Neoyorquino, intento sin exito cursar carrera de Me dicina. Influencias familiares le procuraron trabajo en Universal como montador en 1931, aunque su primera acreditacion como tal es de 1937. Trabaja en Universal hasta 1948; entonces se pasa a la direccion, alternando cine de serie B y television. Es, basicamente, un director de genero, profesional correcto pero no especialmente distinguido. En el espacio dedicado a Frank McDonald se aclara lo re lativo al ultimo western de Landres, firmado por ambos.

       Nacido en Tacoma, Washington, empieza como ayudante de direccion en los albores del cine sonoro, y a mediados de la decada de los 40 se convierte en un director que, con el tiempo, resultara ser muy prolifico y razonablemente vulgar. Cuando empieza a dirigir, el western de serie B y las estrellas asociadas a el se encuentran ya en franca decadencia, por lo que cabe decir que Springsteen es uno de los ultimos en trabajar con estrellas del tipo Bill Elliott o Allan Lane. Esta en activo hasta bien entrados los anos 60, dirigiendo sobre todo westerns, pero tambien thrillers, algunas comedias e incluso varios mu sicales, lo que no conlleva, en su caso, la realizacion de proyectos mas ambiciosos. En todo caso, no es facil encontrar una pelicula de Springsteen que desagrade intensamente. La mayor parte de su actividad profesional la ejerce para Republic, con o sin el concurso del productor Gordon Kay.

    1896-1977
       La aparente ligereza de las peliculas de Howard Hawks es enganosa. Detras de unos filmes que, a primera vista, solo pretenden entretener al espectador, hay mucho mas; mas de lo que pueden ofrecer no pocos directores intelectualmente comprometidos. Por eso, hay que afirmar rotundamente que Howard Hawks es uno de los realizadores mas grandes del cine americano y del cine en general, a la altura de los diez o doce mas ilustres de todos los tiempos. La cosa empezo en el verano de 1916, cuando un joven estudiante de ingenieria, buen de portista, aficionado a los automoviles, decidio aprovechar las vacaciones de verano trabajando en Fa mous Players-Lasky, la futura Paramount, como ascensorista. Un ano despues, ya graduado, vuelve, ahora para colaborar en la produccion como decorador, montador, director de casting, ayudante de direccion y todo lo que fuera necesario hasta que, despues de algun nuevo parentesis, se consolida como guionista, lo que facilita su paso a la direccion, que tuvo lugar en 1926 con la produccion Fox The Road to Glory. De las ocho peliculas mudas que realizo, la mas “hawksiana” es, sin duda, Una novia en cada puerto (A Girl in Every Port, 1928), pero el director es, sin discusion, un hombre del sonoro, acaso por la esplendida utilizacion de los dialogos que lo caracterizo, y que se pone de manifiesto de forma extrema en La fiera de mi nina (Bringing Up Baby, 1938), una de las cumbres de la comedia. Todo aquello que toco Hawks, lo dignifico: la comedia, como se ha puesto de manifiesto, pero tambien el cine negro, con El sueno eterno (The Big Sleep, 1946), el filme de aventuras, con Hatari! (1962) y, desde luego, el western, genero en el que cada una de sus incursiones originaba una obra maestra. Rio Bravo es, sin ningun genero de dudas, una de las dos o tres mejores peliculas de un genero tan inagotable como la vida. Al parecer, el origen de la pelicula hay que encontrarlo en la irritacion que le producia a Hawks Solo ante el peligro (High Noon, Fred Zinnemann, 1952), cuyo metraje discurre en la tarea de encontrar ayuda para que el sheriff del lugar pueda enfrentarse a unos pistoleros que se encuentran camino de la ciudad. La idea motriz de Hawks, permanente a lo largo de toda su filmografia, de mostrar a personas (preferentemente hombres porque las mujeres son, sobre todo, causa de conflictos) que estan realizando su trabajo y lo realizan lo mejor que saben, es la historia de todos y cada uno de sus westerns, particularmente de su falsa coleccion de “rios”, formada por dos peliculas en lugar de cuatro, porque Rio Rojo es, en realidad, Red River, y en Rio de sangre ni siquiera aparece la palabra en el titulo original. Solo Rio Bravo y Rio Lobo, peliculas fronterizas donde las haya, responden a la idea que acuno el termino unificador para las cuatro peliculas.     1906-1987
       Guionista, luego director. Hijo del famoso actor Walter Huston; padre de la estupenda actriz Anjelica Huston. Nacido en Nevada, Missouri, fue un nino enfermizo, lo que le obligo a ejercitarse en deportes, llegando a disputar un buen punado de combates como boxeador aficionado. De espiritu inquieto, se dedico a la pintura, a la cria de caballos, al periodismo, a la literatura y a la escritura de guiones. Vivio en Mexico, Paris e Irlanda. Fue actor casi hasta el final de su vida pero, sobre todo, sera recordado como un magnifico director de cine, creador de universos personales y con un gran amor a la vida que se plasmaba majestuosamente en sus peliculas. Algunas de ellas, memorables, permanecen en la memoria de los buenos aficionados al cine. Hay que citar, sin lu gar a dudas, la primera que dirigio, El halcon maltes (The Maltese Falcon, 1941), uno de los filmes inaugurales del cine negro; La jungla de asfalto (The As phalt Jungle, 1950), muestra senera del mismo ge nero; la popularisima La reina de Africa (The African Queen, 1952); la perturbadora Reflejos en un ojo dorado (Reflections in a Golden Eye, 1967), basada en el relato de Carson McCullers; Sangre sabia (Wise Blood, 1979), a partir de la novela de otra importante escritora sudista, Flannery O’Con nor; y sobre to das ellas, la ultima que dirigio, Dublineses (The Dead, 1987), estremecedora recreacion de uno de los relatos del libro de James Joyce. No son estas las unicas peliculas estimables de John Huston, aunque hay que decir tambien que su filmografia abunda en obras de encargo y proyectos fallidos, por lo que hay que considerarla como irregular. Lo mismo que le ocurrio, entre otros, a Preston Sturges y a Billy Wilder, da la sensacion de que el interes que inicialmente tuvo Huston en pasar de guionista a director fue el de tener la oportunidad de dirigir sus propios guiones, evitando asi que otros pudieran estropearlos. No fue, sin embargo, un es pecialista del western, al que se acerco poco pero casi siempre con un planteamiento personal. Si guiendo algunos consejos, incluyo entre estas atractivas muestras del genero Vidas rebeldes, el ultimo filme interpretado por Marilyn Monroe y por Clark Gable.

    1911-1972
       Prestigioso montador de productos interesantes durante los anos 40 para 20th Century-Fox, debuta como director en 1951 con As Young as You Feel, en la que tiene un papel destacado Marilyn Monroe. Despues de once peliculas no demasiado relevantes, en 1957 se introdujo en el mundo de la television, donde realizo diversos episodios de series, de nuevo sin excesivo exito. A partir de entonces solo dirigio tres nuevos filmes, uno de ellos el que es, probablemente, uno de sus mejores largometrajes, La mujer del latigo.

    1904-1948
       Hermano menor de Leo McCarey, dirige unas 60 peliculas desde 1930 hasta su prematura muerte en 1948. A diferencia de su hermano, en la filmografia de Ray no hay peliculas del periodo mudo. No hay, por otra parte, comparacion posible entre ambos hermanos salvo en una cosa: ninguno de los dos fue un especialista del western.
