Распространенный монетаристский прием подавления инфляции. Для С.д.м. Центральный банк повышает процентные ставки и резервные требования, ограничивает выдачу кредитов; принимаются другие меры по сокращению предложения денег. Платой общества за снижение темпов инфляции при этом становится спад производства (в результате сокращения оборотных средств предприятий, роста взаимных неплатежей), а также увеличение безработицы.
