111 Fireproof Cloth
Cotton cloth treated with various chemical solutions is rendered flameproof, but only asbestos is truly fireproof. For fabrics that are not to be washed, sodium tungstate, borax, boric acid, aluminium acetate or sodium silicate are used mixed with some organic salt such as gypsum, chalk, Epsom salts, china clay, alum, etc. For fabrics that are to be washed such as flannelette - A soaking in a solution of sodium stannate and then in a solution of ammonium sulphate, dried and washed, will render the material flameproof. This process forms a more or less insoluble compound on the fibre. Other compounds used are aluminium sulphate and after-treatment with desodium hydrogen phosphate, to form aluminium phosphate on the fibre (see Asbestos cloth) -
112 Hoehnel's Reagent
Solution 1: 1 gram of potassium iodide dissolved in 100 cc. of water, and iodine added in excess. Solution 2: 20 cc. of glycerol are mixed with 10 cc. of water. To this cold solution are added 30 cc. of concentrated sulphuric acid. The fibre is first treated with Solution i, the excess of reagent is removed with filter paper, and after one or two minutes Solution 2 is applied. -
113 Miltons' Re-Agent
Metallic mercury is dissolved in its own weight of concentrated nitric acid (sp. gr. 1.42) and this solution diluted with an equal volume of water. This re-agent should be kept in a tightly-stoppered bottle, when it will usually retain its staining power for a long time. It is used as a stain for animal fibres. The mixed or separated kinds of fibres are covered with a few drops of Miltons' re-agent and gently warmed (not boiled). In Miltons' re-agent a brick-red colour will develop with silk, while rayons remain white or uncoloured. Copious fumes of red oxide of nitrogen are given off, so the solution of the mercury should take place under a hood. -
114 Vinyon
Vinyon is derived from a vinyl resin, which is known chemically as a co-polymer of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate. The vinyl resin, in the form of a dry powder, is dispersed in acetone, the dispersion is then filtered through a filter press, and de-aerated by allowing it to stand for 48 hours. Extrusion of the filaments is carried out by a dry spinning process. After the filaments have been allowed to stand for at least 12 hours, they are wet twisted, and the twisted yarn is then stretched by means of a suitable device to about 140 per cent of its original length. Two types called Type 1 and Type 2 are in general use. Vinyon E, produced by a modified process, has high elasticity and differs from the regular types of Vinyon in certain other properties. Applications for Vinyon include filter fabrics, fish lines, nets, acid and alkali resistant fabrics and clothing, protective pipe covering, elastic insulation, shower curtains, bathing suits, waterproof clothing, fireproof awnings and curtains, hosiery and fusible shape-retaining fabrics. Staple fibres mixed with cotton or wool are used in making felts and permit production of fabrics which will maintain a pressed crease or fold. Vinyon E is suitable where high elasticity is desirable in cords, braids and woven or knitted fabrics. Uses include suspension for jungle hammocks, heavy duty suspenders for aviators' suits, surgical stockings, knee braces and metatarsal bandages. -
