ὕαινα, ἡ, urspr. eine Sau, gew. – 1) ein reißendes Thier in Libyen, dem Wolfe u. Hunde ähnlich, mit einer starken, borstigen Mähne über Hals u. Rücken, worin die durch den Namen angedeutete Aehnlichkeit mit dem Schweine zu suchen ist; wahrscheinlich die Hyäne der Neuern; Her. 4, 192; Arist. H. A. 6, 31. 8, 5; Opp. Cyn. 3, 263; vgl. Ael. H. A. 7, 22. 6, 15. Sie heißt auch γλάνος od. γάνος, κροκόττας od. κροκούτας. – 2) ein Meerfisch, eine Schollenart, auch ὑαινίς; Numen. bei Ath. VII, 326 f; vgl. Ael. H. A. 9, 49. 13, 27. – 3) ὕαιναι heißen die dem Mithras zum Dienste geweihten Weiber, die Männer λέοντες, Porphyr.
