— Methodologically, the general equilibrium approach views the economy as a closed and interrelated system in which we must simultaneously determine the equilibrium values of all variables and aim at reducing the set of variables taken as exogenous to a small number of physical realities (e.g., the set of economic agents, the available technologies, the preferences and physical endowments of goods of various agents). From a substantive viewpoint, the general equilibrium theory has a more specific meaning: it is a theory of the determination of equilibrium prices and quantities in a system of perfectly competitive markets.
