selbst, I) als Pronomen definitum: ipse. – Wenn »selbst« mit einem Personalpronomen verbunden ist, so hat man zu unterscheiden, ob es als tätiges Subjekt oder leidendes Objekt zu betrachten ist. Im ersten Falle steht von ipse der Nominat. oder beim Akk. mit Infin. der Akkusat.; im zweiten ipse mit dem Personalpronomen in gleichem Kasus, z.B. er verhöhnt sich selbst, se ipsum irridet (er verhöhnt sich und keinen andern); se ipse irridet (er selbst und kein anderer verlacht seine Person): jmd. ist sich selbst feind, alqs sibi ipsi inim icus est. – Auch wird zur Bezeichnung [2117] unseres »selbst« an die persönl. Pronomina ego, tu, sui u. ihren Kasus... met angehängt, zu denen dann häufig noch ipse (im gleichen Kasus mit diesen Pronom.) zur Verstärkung hinzukommt, z.B. mich selbst, memet od. memet ipsum. – von selbst, durch sich selbst, ipse od. meā, tuā, suā sponte (ohne fremdes Zutun, z.B. valvae se ipsae aperuerunt: u. suā sponte alqd nascitur: u. meā sponte feceram); ultro (von freien Stücken): per se (an u. für sich selbst, z.B. scire u. exstingui [v. der Flamme]); a se, verb. ipse a se (von sich, z.B. alqd oritur); sine magistro (ohne Lehrer, z.B. discere); re (durch die Sache an sich, z.B. ita re magis quam summā auctoritate [als durch sein amtliches Ansehen] causa illa defensa est). – wieder zu sich selbst kommen, ad se redire. – er ist die Freundlichkeit selbst, nihil eo viro est humanius. – das Selbst (Ich). mein besseres Selbst (Ich), s. »ich«. – II) als Steigerungsartikel: ipse (z.B. ipsa virtus contemnitur). – vel. adeo (sogar, z.B. vel hostes lacrimis temperare non potuerunt: u. tu adeo mihi suscenses). – (auch) selbst gar nicht, ne ipse quidem.
