Increase Mather — Инкрис Мезер (1639 — 1723), американский священник и богослов крайних пуританских убеждений. Мезер сыграл весьма неприглядную роль в инспирировании судилища над «ведьмами», которое проходило в Сейлеме, штат Массачусетс, в 1692 г. Из 150 человек, обвиненных в колдовстве, 19 были казнены через повешение за «связь с дьяволом». Был одним из провозвестников "Великого пробуждения" [ Great Awakening]. Автор двух широко известных трактатов, "Принятие стороны в конфликте церквей" ["The Churches Quarrel Espoused"] (1710) и "Защита церковных властей Новой Англии" ["A Vindication of the Government of New England Churches"] (1717), которые были переизданы в 1772 с целью вдохновить американцев на борьбу за независимость -
