Полная форма — martello tower. Приморское оборонительное сооружение в виде круглой башни. Много таких башен было построено в 1803 г. на юго-восточном побережье Англии в связи с возможным вторжением наполеоновских войск. Слово происходит от названия мыса на острове Корсика, где в 1794 г. после упорного сопротивления гарнизон башни был захвачен англичанами. Строительство башен было закончено слишком поздно, чтобы они принесли хотя бы какую-то реальную пользу. Из 100 построенных башен уцелели только 43, и лишь 10 из них «обитаемы», остальные же оказались забытыми и заброшенными. После войны с Наполеоном эти башни стали использовать как наблюдательные пункты для задержания контрабандистов, пытавшихся провезти шёлк, алкоголь, табак, шерсть. Во время Второй мировой войны башни опять стали использовать как пункты обозрения.
