Maori became an official language of NZ in 1987. Maori is a polynesian dialect closely related to those of Rarotonga, French Polynesia (Tahiti) and Hawaii. It belongs to the Malayo-Polynesian group of languages. The Maori alphabet consists of five vowels (a,e,i,o,u) and eight consonants (h,k,m,n,p,r,t,w). There are about seven tribal variants -
