       Actualmente, la expresión hace referencia a los errores que, a veces, cometen los grandes escritores: hasta los grandes escritores suelen cometer faltas; los grandes escritores tienen también sus despistes; a los grandes escritores se les escapa de vez en cuando algún gazapo; también el genio se equivoca alguna vez
       La frase está sacada de un verso 359 de la Ars poetica de Quinto Horacio Flaco (65 a.C.-8 d.C.). La frase original dice: Indignor, quandoque bonus dormitat Homerus(me enfada ver que hasta el eximio Homero de vez en cuando se duerme). Lo que molesta a Horacio es que Homero tiene de vez en cuando momentos de descuido, momentos en los que no está a la altura de su genio. No quiere decir que cometa faltas como un escritor cualquiera, sino que es una lástima que el excelente Homero de vez en cuando olvida algún dato. Pero estos pequeños detalles no empañan para nada la grandeza de Homero, al contrario, disculpa la grandeza del genio.
