Чугун, полученный при длительном отжиге белого чугуна, при котором происходят процессы декарбюризации и графитизации, устраняющие частично или полностью цементит. Графит находится в форме углерода отжига. Если преобладает реакция декарбюризации, то продукт имеет светлую поверхность излома — ковкий белосердечный чугун. Если поверхность излома будет темной — темносердечный ковкий чугун. В Соединенных Штатах производится только темносердечный ковкий чугун. Ковкий чугун имеет преимущественно ферритную матрицу; перлитный ковкий чугун может содержать шаровидный перлит или отпущенный мартенсит, в зависимости от термообработки и желаемой твердости.
