    This Ngeri style Haka is a Maori challenge song credited to Te Rauparaha. Today it is performed before sporting events and other occasions by men. In fact the All Black rendition of Ka Mate may have undergone quite a few changes along the way to make it more impressive or appropriate to the game of rugby. (including a war-like final high jump!)

    Type of shrub
    Fond of more fertile and sheltered sites, this broad leaved coprosma has attractive orange berries which native birds enjoy in autumn. The leaves make a poultice which was used as a substitute for comfrey in healing, particularly of broken bones. It seems to have a deep heat effect on fractures.

    Identification - 50 cm (20 in.). Large gull-sized tern with white body and grey wings along with a diagnostic prominent red bill. Its cap is black in the breeding season becoming grizzled when it is not breeding.
    Similar species - The large size and conspicuous red beak of this bird make it difficult to confuse it with other terns.
    Range - Widespread in Europe, Africa, Asia and North America. In New Zealand widely spread throughout mainland with a northward movement in winter.
    Status - Common.
    Where to see - Sheltered coastal waters of both islands. - Occasionally on lakes.
    Notes - Nests in large colonies and roosts in small flocks.
