[música, baile] flamencoFLAMENCOAlthough often seen as synonymous with Spanish culture abroad, flamenco originated in the southern region of Andalusia. It has deep roots in Gypsy, Arab and Jewish music, and it is Spain’s “gitanos” (gypsies) who have kept it flourishing to the present day. Originally, flamenco consisted of unaccompanied singing (“cante”). Later this was accompanied by flamenco guitar (“toque”), rhythmic hand clapping (“palmas”), rhythmic feet stamping (“zapateado”) and dance (“baile”). The castanets (“castañuelas”) so often associated with flamenco were introduced only later.
