  • 3 Boiled-Off Silk

    BOILED-OFF SILK, II
The product of the boiling-off (also called, degumming) process, in which raw silk, thrown silk, or fabricated silk is subjected to a treatment in hot water, soap and other solutions to dissolve and remove the gum or sericin, which is the coat protecting the clean fibre filaments of a thread from becoming separated, and to remove tints, dirt and other foreign substances which are not inherent in the nature of the silk. (Official definition, U.S.A.) ————————
    BOILED-OFF SILK, I
Undyed thrown silk which has had the natural gum removed by boiling in soap solution. This process of boiling-off removes about 25 per cent of the weight. It is a necessary operation (same as degumming). Before boiling-off the thread is harsh, stiff and dull, but afterwards it is soft, flexible and lustrous.

  • 12 Charmeuse

A dress fabric made of all silk yarns, and with a satin face and crepe-like back. A hard twisted warp and crepe weft is used. The finished cloth is dull but soft. The name Charmeuse is the registered trade mark of a fabric originated by a French firm, Bianchini, Ferier and Co., bat it has been made common by copying the fabric on a large scale. The Berlin Chamber of Industry and Commerce gives the following opinion: - Charmeuse has been understood commercially for many decades as a woven silk fabric with a lustrous duchess satin-like face and a dull crepe-like back. Originally made from natural silk, this material has been manufactured in the last few years both in part or wholly from rayon. " Tricot-charmeuse " is a knitted fabric, the back of which has an appearance similar to that of Charmeuse. Tricot-charmeuse has been largely used as a rayon hosiery material in Saxony and Thuringia, but such materials have also been called " Charmeuse " for some time past in the factories making Tricot charmeuse. It is considered, therefore, that the term " Charmeuse," without some special designation, has no power of differentiation and cannot be considered for registration as a trade mark.

  • 16 Mohair

The hair obtained from the Angora goat, and is grown chiefly in Turkey, South Africa, the U.S.A. and Australia. It is lustrous white, fine, wavy and long. The length varies from 4-in. to 10-in. and spins from 28's to 50's quality. It has no felting properties. That from the U.S.A. is much lower in quality than the others, having about 15 per cent more kempy fibre. Mohair is chiefly used in braids, felt hats, linings, plushes, etc., and the coarser kinds for carpets and low-grade woollen fabrics. ————————
    ANGORA, or "Mohair"
The hair or wool of the goat of that name. More generally known as mohair. The animal originally had its home in Asia Minor. About 1858 it was introduced into Cape Colony, from which country we now get a large supply. The natives of Asia Minor made shawls from the wool, which resembled Cashmere shawls. In colour it is white, average length of hair is 6 to 8 inches, and- has a curly structure. It is a very useful fibre, and largely used by the manufacturers of Astrakhan, wool crepons, plushes and cashmeres; also used in many silk cloths. The French use the fibre in a cloth named "poil de chevre", which has a fine spun silk coloured warp and angora weft. Bradford -imitates this cloth with a fine cotton warp. It has more lustre than wool, but is not so warm. Sir Titus Salt, by introducing the manufacture of goods made from mohair into Saltaire, raised Saltaire into a town from a village.

  • 17 Persian Rugs

These are the finest among Oriental rugs and are made of silk, cotton or wool. The warp is mostly cotton, with a short, close, velvet-like pile of silk or wool. Colours are very soft and lustrous, in designs of floral and animal patterns. Usually oblong shape. There are no undecorated spaces of plain colour. The borders are characteristic Persian ornament and the Herati design is a favourite centre motif as well as the " Pear." The use of a cotton warp is distinctive, since nearly all other Eastern rugs have wool (see Rug Designs)

There are several varieties of plants producing vegetable down, as follows: Brazil - Bombax heptaphyllum; Bombax ceiba. The product is known as ceiba or Paina buifa cotton. South Asia and Africa - B. malabaricum. Known in India as Simal cotton or Red Silk cotton. Venezuela - B. cumanensis, giving a product known as Lana del tamber or Lana vejetale. Brazil - B. • 20 Camlet

A fine, thin, plain-weave cloth, woven from camlet yarns, 30-in., 60 yards, usually dyed bright red. Camlet yarn is spun from lustrous wool, Lincoln or Leicester. In the 17th century a camlet of wool and silk was used for making gowns. It is mentioned in Pepys Diary, in 1664: " I put on my camelott suit, the best I ever wore in my life."
