Люминесценция, «холодное свечение» — испускание (излучение) фотонов (квантов света) молекулами, возбужденными химической реакцией (без нагревания). Такая реакция может быть катализирована ферментом, как, напр., превращение люциферина в оксилюциферин с помощью люциферазы. Л. применяется в некоторых цито- и гистологических методах окрашивания тканей флуоресцентными красителями (хромомицин А3, DAPI, краситель Хехста, кинакрин и др.).
