TRADUCCIÓN.—Hace muchos años, estando yo prisionero en la cárcel de Avilés me habían dado el oficio de cabo de varas, porque así lo habían querido los funcionarios de aquella casa de encadenamiento, casi todos ellos habían sido legionarios en la contienda de Nuestra Patria, todos menos el director, que mandaba menos en aquel pequeño presidio que yo mismo, que era un preso enchufado por así decirlo, por mis hermanos los legionarios. —El asunto era, que yo no vivía mejor que mis compañeros de infortunio, pero dentro de lo que cabía, yo era un preso que me movía dentro de aquella cárcel, con mucha más libertad que todos los demás. —Me recuerdo que era por el invierno, en una noche fría y muy lluviosa, y no habíamos en la cárcel de aquella nada más que una docena de presos, y todos estábamos acomodados dentro de una grande celda, de la cual yo era el responsable de lo que pudiera suceder en ella, que acaecía de todo pero con mucho talento, pues lo mismo jugábamos a las cartas, y demás juegos prohibidos, que solíamos beber vino hasta casi emborracharnos, pues a todos los funcionarios yo me los tenía tan ganados, que solía conseguir de ellos muchas prohibidas cosas, y todo era por mor de que yo siempre estaba hablando con ellos de cosas del Tercio, y a mí me parecía, que yo sabía de la Legión más que todos ellos juntos, aunque hubieran hecho la guerra convirtiéndose en vencedores de la contienda. —La Legión ha sido para mí desde antes de mi propia nacencia, algo muy sagrado, porque mi padre había sido fundador y Laureado de Ella, y por si alguien se recuerda de su nombre, se llamaba Julio Gómez Sánchez, y porque yo también forme en sus filas amándola y queriéndola. Por todas estas cosas, la Legión siempre fue para mí muy sagrada y querida. Sucedía que estabamos todos los presos dentro de aquella grande celda, y cada cual hacía lo que mejor le pareciese, algunos ya se habían acostado en aquellos camastros que se movían como columpios, con los jergones rotos la mitad de ellos, y llenos de suciedad y porquería por todas partes, para mí que aquellos inmundos camastros eran propios para los cerdos y no para las personas, pero por aquellos tiempos la vida era así, porque la Justicia y la Libertad, se encontraba tan prisionera como nosotros mismos. —Serían aproximadamente las diez de la noche, cuando el cerrojo del portón de la celda le oímos chirrear y don Manuel, un funcionario que había sido sargento del Tercio, un gigante de paisano como un roble de fuerte y grande, abrió la puerta de par en par y dejó caer dentro de la celda un esquelético hombre que traía entre sus poderosas manos lo mismo que si fuese un muñeco. El pobre desgraciado estaba de mojado, lo mismo que si lo hubiesen pescado en la mar, lugar dónde él se había lanzado para asesinar su miserable existencia, según había manifestado el municipal que le había traído a la cárcel, pues al parecer la borrachera que le envolvía, hiciérale ahogarse mismamente delante de las narices del municipal, que fuera quién le había salvado la vida. —Aquel pingajo de hombre tal parecía que no estaba bien de la mollera, por no decir que loco del todo estaba, por causa de la asquerosa borrachera que al parecer le enmadejaba. El caso fue, que don Manuel me dijo que le cuidara hasta que dejase de estar tan borracho, y sin más palabras, volvió cerrar la puerta el funcionario, dejándonos dentro aquel paisano, que nada más que el guardián se había marchado, se puso en pie con tal rapidez como si eléctrico lo fuera, y comenzó a mirarnos a todos con sus ojos sumamente abiertos y extraviados, lagrimosos y muy amenazadores, lo mismo que si pretendiese asesinarnos a todos nosotros. Después, se acostó encima de su camastro y dio comienzo a llorar desconsolado, al mismo tiempo que temblando todo él, se quejaba con palabras deshilbanadas y tartamudeantes, después se levantó con la velocidad de un relámpago, y comenzó a envestir puñando con su cabeza contra la puerta, que estaba forrada por la parte de dentro con chapas de hierro, le cogimos con rapidez consolándole como mejor supimos, a la sazón que le aconsejábamos que no hiciera cosas que le harían daño, pero él forcejeando por escaparse de entre nosotros, decía que quería morirse, y que no descansaría hasta asesinar su miserable vida. Dejé al paisano casi del todo sosegado en compañía de otros compañeros que a su manera le consolaban, y me marché con otros a jugar una partida al tute en la que antes estábamos enfrascados jugándonos unas botellas de vino para el día siguiente. —Mientras estábamos jugando, comencé a estudiar con mi pensamiento los haceres lleldados por aquel embriagado paisano, y tales encerebrares me alumbraron la luz de que aquel condenado borracho no quería morir, porque si cualquiera se quiere quitar la vida, no lo hace delante de las narices de un guardia, sino que lo más propio, es que busque un lugar donde nadie le vea, lo mismo que cuando envistiera contra la puerta, aquellos cabezazos que hiciera encima de sus manos, no eran para quererse abrir la cabeza buscando la muerte. —Aquel paisano era un verdadero granuja, que alguna cosa andaba buscando con todos aquellos espavimientos. —Muy pronto tuvimos que dejar de jugar, para ir de nuevo hasta la puerta, donde otra vez el paisano sujetado por dos compañeros se encorajinaba por querer puñarla de nuevo. Fue entonces cuando me dije a mí mismo, que aquel hombre de mierda, nos iba a fastidiar toda la noche con tanto querer puñar la puerta. El caso fue, que llegué a junto él y le dije que yo era el cabo de la celda, y en ausencia de los funcionarios yo era quién allí mandaba, y si lo que quería era morir, que nosotros mismos le íbamos asesinar para que dejase de armar tanta gresca. —El caso fue, que me quité el cinto de mis pantalones, a la par que les pedía a mis compañeros los de ellos, y mientras que con cuatro o cinco cinturones estaba haciendo una larga cuerda, el condenado de paisano que sabía más de cárceles que todos nosotros juntos, gritaba alterado que sí, que quería morirse y luego. —Cuando tuve la cuerda cornalera echa, le hice un lazo y se lo colgué al paisano del pescuezo, no haciendo espavimento alguno, tal parecía que era cierto que andaba buscando la muerte. Le llevamos así cogido por el ronzal como pollino que era, hasta el final de la celda, donde como a dos metros del suelo, había un enorme ventanal enrejado con fuertes hierros, cuando me subí encima del camastro para amarrar la cuerda en las rejas con miras de ahorcarlo en broma, el pobre paisano plantó sus rodillas en el suelo, y llorando desconsoladamente como un niño desamparado, plagado de un tenebroso miedo que por todo su cuerpo se alumbraba, nos dijo suplicante que él no quería morir, que no tenía trabajo, ni casa, ni a nadie, que lo que hubiera hecho había sido nada más que para que le metiesen en la cárcel, así era que entre la cárcel y los papeleos de jueces y de médicos de locos, se pasaba los inviernos resguardado en casa sin gotera, camastro seco y comida gratis, hasta que llegase el buen tiempo, y que esto mismo ya lo hubiera hecho varias veces en otras ciudades de la Patria, donde le habían proporcionado un estupendo resultado. —El caso fue, que todos nos pusimos muy alegres, y hasta el mismo paisano sonriente, se quitó de su cuello el dogal, que fue desaparejando los cinturones en el mismo suceder que nos los daba, y después como si no hubiese pasado nada, nos preguntó si teníamos algo de comer, pues estaba muerto de hambre, entonces el cocinero muy rápido, le puso la perola de judías entre sus piernas, en el suceder que le daba un trozo de pan y una cuchara, le dijo, que comiese judías hasta que se hartara. —El paisano atenazado por el hambre, se sentó encima del camastro con el perol bien terciado entre sus piernas y comenzó a embutirse grandes cucharadas de judías, no encontrándolas al parecer nada saladas, y sin hablar con nadie palabra, dejó al perol sin nada del potaje, después se bebió tras descomunal hartura, un grande jarro de agua del cano del retrete, y seguidamente se enroscó en su catre, con todas sus ropas puestas mojadas como estaban, y tapándose con una manta que era lo mismo que un saco sucio y malo, comenzó con la cabeza también tapada, a buscar el descanso en el sueño. —No debía de encontrarse muy bien en su sitio, pues no hacía nada más que dar vueltas, así como resoplar incomodado debajo de aquella cerda manta, mientras que el desvencijado catre continuamente se movía, dentro de un chirriar de hierros viejos y herrumbrosos, y después de dar muchísimas vueltas, de encogerse y estirarse, y hacer resoplinos y saltos, comenzó a quejarse, primero muy quedamente, después con más fuerza, y por último se levantó del camastro muy encogido y con sus manos apretando desesperado el estómago, que debía de tenerle muy lleno, por la causa del enorme perol de judías que en él no cabían, y no querían salirse ni por encima ni por debajo, por esto el pobre paisano estaba que explotaba, según mí parecer y el de todos mis compañeros, que primero lo tomamos en risas, y algunos graciosos le lanzaban sátiras, y muchas de ellas eran tan picarescas y ocurrentes, que más gracia y regocijo nos hacían, el desdichado paisano que no hacía nada más que dar vueltas por la celda, con las manos atajando su barriga y quejándose a grandes voces, debía de estar lleno de terror pensando, que se encontraba dentro de la misma oficina del mismo diablo, al observar como todos nosotros muy contentos y gozosos, nos estabamos riendo sin hacerle el menor caso. Dejose caer entonces en el suelo, lanzando gritos muy fuertes y arrollicándose a la par que decía que se moría, y que por el amor del Hacedor llamáramos a un médico. —No me hizo falta a mí llamar al funcionario, pues con tal enloquecido escándalo vino él presto armado con un látigo en la mano, para acariciarle el lomo, nada más que abrió la puerta don Manuel rabiado y con mala leche, cogió al pobre paisano que estaba tirado en el suelo dando voces lastimosas dentro de endemoniados revolcones de dolor, primeramente le sacudió con fuerza, pues tal parecía entre sus manos como un muñeco de trapo, le ordenó que dejase de dar más voces sino quería darlas por algo, pero el paisano no atendía a mas palabras que las que le alumbraban sus propios dolores, que no eran otras que el decir que se moría sino llamaban con rapidez a un médico. —Don Manuel comprendió que no era la borrachera la que lo ataba en aquel estado, cuando nosotros le dijimos que se hubo comido todo el perol de judías.
