(1841-1904) Стэнли, Генри МортонЗнаменитый исследователь Африки, журналист. Родился в Англии. С 1858 в США. В начале Гражданской войны [ Civil War] вступил в Армию конфедератов [ Confederates], попал в плен и стал воевать в армии Союза, затем на флоте северян. После войны начал карьеру журналиста. В 1868 получил задание от газеты "Нью-Йорк геральд" [New York Herald] отправиться в Африку на поиски пропавшего там миссионера Д. Ливингстона, экспедиция которого в 1866 начала поиски истоков Нила. Стэнли выехал из США в 1869, достиг острова Занзибар 6 января 1871, а 10 ноября обнаружил Ливингстона в деревушке Уджиджи на восточном берегу оз. Танганьика (на этом месте ныне стоит памятный камень). Экспедиция была продолжена совместно. В 1872 Стэнли опубликовал рассказ об этой экспедиции ("Как я нашел Ливингстона" ["How I Found Livingstone"]). После смерти Ливингстона продолжил изучение Африки. В 1874-77 установил, что оз. Виктория представляет собой единое водное пространство, а не пять отдельных озер, проследил течение р. Конго от истоков до устья. В 1879-84 в деталях исследовал бассейн р. Конго. В 1887-89 исследовал Восточную Африку, описал потухший вулкан Рувензори.
