Она желает Тому написать еще много прекрасных книг и прожить счастливую жизнь.► Фильм, мало известный во Франции, но крупная удача Миннелли как живописца нравов. Миннелли изобретательно переместил центр интереса пьесы Роберта Эндерсона. Сделал ли он это под влиянием цензуры того времени, по сути, не имеет большого значения, поскольку в результате фильм стал только богаче. Вместо молодого гомосексуалиста Миннелли рисует портрет совсем неопытного подростка, чувствующего неясные порывы, страдающего от конформизма своего окружения и трафаретного образа мужественности, которому подчиняются (или притворяются, будто подчиняются) все окружающие. Стиль картины балансирует, с одной стороны между деликатной нежностью, особенно в использовании цвета и экстерьеров, в игре Деборы Керр и Джона Керра, в расстановке драматически напряженных сцен, и, с другой стороны, едкой иронией (местами даже беспощадной, несмотря на свою сдержанность) во взгляде на мир американских колледжей. В этом отношении фильм является своеобразным мужским эквивалентом картины Негулеско Позаботьтесь о моей малышке, Take Care of My Little Girl. Из этого равновесия рождается совершенно спокойная картина, идущая вразрез с веяниями эпохи. Сторонясь цветастой барочности Рея или Казана ( Казан поставил эту пьесу в театре), которые ни за что не упустили бы возможности выставить главного героя невротиком, Миннелли видит его как взвешенного, скорее мирного мальчика с собственным вкусом, гораздо более чуткого, нежели его товарищи. Именно чуткость становится его ахиллесовой пятой; в окружающем героя конформистском мире она приносит ему одни неприятности. С точки зрения драматургии, фильм не делает ненужных попыток как-то разрядить действие. Он строится на последовательности восхитительных парных сцен, где каждый персонаж получает возможность раскрыться полностью и выразительно.
