Ранним и поздним "Lithe" ("líða" на древнеанглийском) назывались раньше июнь и июль соответственно. Все названия месяцев в календаре Shire – это их древнеанглийские названия, деформировавшиеся с течением времени. В календаре хоббитов словом "(the) Lithe" назывался средний (183-й) день года (см. приложение D). Поскольку считается, что все хоббитские названия месяцев не принадлежат ко всеобщему (а являются пережитками, сохранившимися из языка, бывшего у них до переселения), то лучше всего сохранить "Lithe" без изменений (как это нужно сделать и со всеми остальными календарными именами собственными, переводя приложения). В нидерландском переводе сохранено "Lithe" (это слово принадлежит исключительно английскому языку – ни в одном другом календаре родственных слов не обнаружено). В шведском переводе изменен текст (пролог к "Властелину Колец", раздел 3) "… которого переизбирали каждые семь лет на Свободной Ярмарке в Белых Холмах в день Lithe, то есть в день летнего солнцестояния" на "Han valdes vart sjunde år vid midsommarvakan uppe pä kritklipporna i sommarsolståndets natt". Помимо того, что убрано упоминание о "Свободной Ярмарке", а "Белые Холмы" ("White Downs") переведены как "меловые утёсы", здесь неверно передан смысл и искажены обычаи, которые, очевидно, имеются в виду. Это было не ночное празднество или "всенощная", а дневное, сопровождавшееся "Свободной Ярмаркой" (в нидерландском переводе "Vrije Markt"), которая называлась так потому, что на ней каждый желающий мог бесплатно поставить свою палатку. Переводчик изменил текст в соответствии со скандинавским праздником летнего солнцестояния, который получил христианское название благодаря тому, что его связали с днем св. Иоанна Крестителя (24 июня), приходящимся на более-менее правильный день – "Jónsvaka", "Jónsmessa" по-исландски и "Sankthansnat", "Skaersommernat" по-датски. Но речь не идет о сне в летнюю ночь!
