    Occasional visitor to the NZ coast. They breed on Campbell, Macquarie and Antipodes Islands. This is the largest species of seal. Adult males reach 4-5m nose to tail length, and 3.6 tonnes in weight. Females are 2-3m long and weigh about 900 kg.

    An endemic climbing fern with twining wiry stems and 10cm bright green leaves. Its rhizome is terrestrial. It is found in lowland forests in the upper North Island. This is the only climbing fern in New Zealand fronds will grow to an indefinite length as it climbs up trees.

    Comments:
    Silver body with black crescent shaped marking at the back of the head. Usually occurs in water deeper than 50 m. Important commercially, about 1000 tonnes per year are trawled in southeastern Australia. Some fish in New Zealand have been aged at more than 50 years.

    A rare shrubby tree growing to 4m around lowland and hilly forest margins, forest scrubland, rocks and banks from sea level to about an altitude of 1000 metres. The flowers are profuse and fragrant. The flower panicles can reach 2m in length. A mature plant with multiple stems and long drooping pale green to yellowish green leaves provides a tropical feel to a cool climate garden.

    The typical hei-tiki has a large, angled rounded or pointed head, usually just slightly less then half of the total length and with the mouth on either the left or right side. The eyes were often inset with paua shell (Haliotis iris) but later, after arrival of Europeans, red sealing wax was used. Usually, the remainder of the body featured a relatively large abdomen and the legs in a squatting position, with the heels together and both hands resting on the thighs.
