Режиссерский взгляд Мнушкин на своего героя немногим отличается от взгляда Андре Суареса (в великолепном труде «Души и лица» [Ames et visages]): «Этот великий художник, мастер смеха, сам никогда не смеется. Мольер много выстрадал. Его комедии полны откровенных признаний – для тех, кто умеет слушать. Из всех людей своего времени он – самый изолированный; тем более потому, что он никогда не бывает одинок… Впрочем, он измотан; он гораздо старше своих 40 или 50 лет… Он не знает счастья и не может нести его другим». Ариана Мнушкин не любит XVII век, но все же, будто бы против воли, показывает его величие, благородство, мрачную суровость. Мольер, как и все гении, идет наперекор своему веку, но при этом остается его порождением и лучшей иллюстрацией. Режиссер показывает нам Мольера вблизи, в интимной обстановке: ведь это портрет, написанный коллегой. В одной восхитительной сцене Мольер пишет сцену для «Мнимого больного», и Мадлен советует ему украсть идею у самого себя – ему, укравшему столько идей у других. «Визуальные» сцены не так уж неуместны, как это принято считать. Разве страсть к пышным декорациям не чувствуется в комедиях-балетах Мольера? В конце концов, он совершенно точно не был ригористом.
