Многие знают песню 'Sophisticated Lady' Дюка Эллингтона, но никак не могут подобрать подходящего русского эквивалента. Что же это за женщина такая? Словари предлагают разные варианты: утончённая, искушённая, изощрённая и т. д. Но это всё не то. Опытная, рафинированная тоже не совсем подходит. Элегантная леди, может быть? Именно английское слово «леди» имеет те самые оттенки значения, которые подразумевает слово sophistication: the characteristics of fashionable life and ways, experience in this and a lack of natural simplicity (характерные черты модной жизни, манеры поведения и отсутствие естественной простоты). Sophisticated может относиться к оборудованию или технике: an unusually sophisticated system of military protectorates — тщательно продуманная система военных протекторатов; sophisticated search techniques — тщательно разработанные методы поиска; technological sophistication — высокий уровень технологии. Ещё одно значение это слово имеет в сочетании a sophisticated novel — сложный многосюжетный роман. -
