(1778-1860) Полдинг, Джеймс КеркПисатель-сатирик, государственный и общественный деятель, администратор, сторонник "джефферсоновской демократии" [ Jeffersonian Democracy]. Его предки были выходцами из Голландии. Играл заметную роль в культурной жизни Нью-Йорка. В 1807-08 и 1816-20 издал серию сатирических эссе "Салмагунди" ["Salmagundi"] о жизни нью-йоркцев, оставил богатое творческое наследие, основа которого - произведения о жизни европейских переселенцев в Америке. Хотя он не имел систематического образования, в 1824 ему было присвоено звание почетного магистра Колумбийского университета [ Columbia University].
