21 Sugar Bags
These are made of jute yarns in four general sizes, viz.: (1) Sugar bag, 26-in. wide by 48-in. long, 21/2-lb. plain weave; (2) Cuban, 29-in. by 48-in., 21/2-lb., this has a double warp in twill weave; (3) twilled, 28-in. by 48-in., 21/2--lb., 2 & 2 twill weave, single warp; (4) sugar pocket, 18-in. by 27-in., 11/8-lb., plain weave. -

25 Calcutta Hemp
See Jute. ———————— A fibre principally used for canvas bags, cordage, mats, wrappers, etc. Very largely manufactured in India, where the bulk of the fibre is grown. A good trade is done in Dundee. The fibre is obtained from the bast of the Corchorus Capsularis, an. annual plant grown from seed. The plant grows up to 17 feet in height. The fibre is very strong, fine, pliable, of brownish colour, and has a good lustre, is uniform in diameter, has good dyeing qualities, but when exposed to the weather soon deteriorates. -

27 Patti
PATTI, or PATThe hair of a goat, common in Kabul and Peshawar. It is used in making the fabric known as Pattu. ———————— A wool fabric native woven in the hill districts of India, in pieces from 9-in. to 18-in. wide and 10 yards to 12 yards long. Made of pat wool or sometimes Shabri. Several of these are sewn together to make a pattu. ———————— An Indian term given to a variety of carpets made in the Madras Presidency. The designs are very crude and only blue, white and red colours used. The yarns are generally cotton in very coarse counts; wool is seldom used, but jute is sometimes used. The term also describes the leg wrapping made in narrow strips from cotton or wool yarns and wound spirally round the leg from ankle to knee. The military puttee is derived from this. The term also describes another narrow fabric made 9-in. to 12-in. wide and stitched together to make bags, tents, screens, etc. This is made from cotton or jute yarns, and is common in the Madras district. -
28 Belgian Bagging Fabric
Jute fabrics for sugar are woven without the use of oil, and oil substitutes are used in the batching mixtures. This is because the hot moist sugar when packed into the bags will absorb some of the oil if present. 29 Hessian
(See Burlaps). A fabric of strong coarse jute or hemp yarns, used as a packing material, also for bags. The weights range from about 6-oz. to 15-oz. per yard of 40-in. cloth. The finer qualities are used for cushion covers, bags, etc., and the coarser for burlaps, sacking, etc. -

31 B. Twills
B. TWILLSA heavy fabric for bags, sacks, etc., made of jute yarns, 44 in. wide, in 2 X 1 twill weave. The warp is two-fold, 10-lb. per spindle, and weft about 32-lb. per spindle. There are three blue stripes in the width of the cloth. -
32 Cadilla Fibre
Light-brown coloured, very long, lustrous, strong bast fibre obtained from the Urena plant in South America. Used for bags, ropes, etc. In America the fibre is known as Caesar weed. It resembles jute in appearance. The average length is 6 feet. -
33 Chotee
The term in India for the jute cloth made in the Dacca district. They use the short staple fibres as the long staple are exported. Gunny bags are made from the cloth and these are sold almost as cheap as the raw material. -
34 Desi Fibre
Indian jute. The fibre is long and very soft, but has a dark colour and is used for gunny bags and burlap. Comes from Hooghly, Jessori, Bardurian and other districts. -
35 Dittis
A strong fabric used for bags in the 18th century - probably of coarse jute yarns. -
36 Hop Pocketing
A very coarse jute bagging, similar to tarpaulin fabric. Used for hop bags. -
37 Hopsacking
HOPSACK, or HOPSACKINGA woollen fabric, woven in hopsack weave is known under this name, and used for dress goods and suiting. ———————— A very coarse plain weave jute fabric used for bags. -
38 Seed Bag
A plain weave material of jute yarns, made into bags 20-in. wide by 40-in. long, weighing 111/4-oz., 8-lb. warp and weft. -
39 Tarpauling
TARPAULING, TARPAULINDouble warp heavy and coarse jute fabric for wagon and hayrick covers and bags. Plain weave, 7-lb. to 8-lb. warp, 6-lb. to 20-lb. weft, 14/18 porter, 10/16 shots per inch. -
