По его инициативе и под его руководством во время войны была построена дорога длиною в 478 миль из Индии в Китай через Бирму для снабжения войск в Китае (позднее получила его имя [ Stilwell Road]). Однако из-за разногласий с Чан Кайши был в 1944 отозван в США.
