Сильфонный компенсатор предназначен:- для компенсации температурных изменений длины трубопроводов,
- снятия вибрационных нагрузок,
- герметизации трубопроводов,
- предотвращения разрушения и деформации трубопроводов,
- компенсации несоосности соединений трубопроводов.

Сильфонный компенсатор состоит из одного или нескольких сильфонов и ограничительной, соединительной и защитной арматуры.
Сильфон – упругая однослойная или многослойная гофрированная оболочка для разделения сред, сохраняющая прочность, осевую устойчивость и герметичность при расчетных циклических осевых, поперечных, изгибающих нагрузках, и при комбинации, под воздействием внутреннего и/или внешнего давления, температуры и механических усилий.
Сильфон, являясь составляющей конструкции, испытывает следующие виды деформаций:
- осевая (сжатие и растяжение по оси сильфона),
- поперечная (сдвиг оси сильфона),
- угловая (изменение направления оси сильфона).
Сильфонные компенсаторы могут использоваться:- для компенсации температурного расширения с целью предотвращения разрушения труб при деформирующих нагрузках;
- компенсации несоосности в трубопроводных системах при монтаже;
- абсорбции вибраций;
- герметизации трубопроводов и соединения труб различного типа;
- аспирации и отвода выхлопных газов топливных систем (в качестве эксгаустеров: от автомобильных до дизельных топливных систем судов с большим диаметром сильфона).
