1924-2002

   Nacido en Paris, de padres italianos, Albert Band trabajo en los estudios Pathe antes de ir a Hollywood a finales de los anos 40. En la Meca del Cine, aprende casi todo lo que hay que aprender de la mano de John Huston, con quien colaboro en La jungla de asfalto (The Asphalt Jungle, 1950) como ayudante de direccion, y en The Red Badge of Courage (1951) como guionista. En 1956 empieza a dirigir. A partir de comienzos de los anos 60 diversifica su trabajo: pro ductor, guionista, actor ocasional, director, in terviene en proyectos de financiacion internacional. En todo caso, Albert Band es un realizador de escasa relevancia dedicado al cine de genero, que tra bajo en Italia y Espana en la epoca del spaghettiwestern firmando, en ocasiones, con el nombre de Alfredo Antonini. Caben dudas sobre el papel que jugo en los tres westerns mediterraneos en los que figura.

Llega al cine de la mano del productor, luego realizador, Stanley Kramer, en el departamento de publicidad. Dirige mas para la television que para el cine, donde sus dos primeros westerns permitieron abrigar esperanzas en relacion con su hipotetica relevancia como creador dentro del genero, esperanzas que quedaron defraudadas con los dos ultimos que dirigio. Su pelicula para television La casa de cristal (The Glass House, 1972), segun la historia de Truman Capote, se estreno comercialmente en cines, obteniendo un gran exito.

   Britanico de nacimiento, empieza en su pais natal como montador para General Post Office, unidad de produccion cinematografica patrocinada por el Estado. Director de cine en 1941, su primer filme dramatico, The Woman in Hall, lo rueda en 1947 para Wessex Films. Posteriormente se traslada a Australia, a cuya cinematografia ayudo a brotar casi de la nada. De su unico western como realizador, que no merece excesiva atencion, se puede decir que, al parecer, fue codirigido por otros dos directores, australianos ambos, Donald Crombie y Ken Hannam. No se han incluido entradas independientes para ellos en este diccionario dada la escasa relevancia de la pelicula, de ellos mismos, del caracter austral del producto que, eso si, tiene todas las caracteristicas del western, y, en ultima instancia, porque no consta con claridad su autoria.

1899-1964

   Nacido Samuel Neufeld, hermano de Sigmund Neufeld, futuro jefe de produccion de PRC, dirige cortometrajes desde 1926, y largometrajes desde 1933. Probablemente el mas prolifico realizador norteamericano de la era sonora, dirigio, sobre todo, westerns. Por sus manos paso una parte importante de los viejos heroes del genero, en peliculas de una hora de duracion y argumentos eternamente repetidos. Solo leer su filmografia produce cierto vertigo. Establecerla rigurosamente es una tarea ardua, especialmente en lo relativo al orden cronologico estricto, por lo que en esta ocasion mas que en ninguna otra hay que entender que ese orden es susceptible de correccion. Utiliza los seudonimos de Peter Stewart y Sherman Scott. Se ha prescindido de tres aparentes largometrajes, situados al final de su carrera y obtenidos, cada uno de ellos, por super posicion de dos episodios del serial televisivo “Hawkeye and the Last of the Mohicans”. Aunque el nivel medio de los filmes de Sam Newfeld es realmente bajo, hay que citar dos curiosidades: Harlem on the Prairie (1937) esta interpretado integramente por negros, y The Terror of Tiny Town (1938), por enanos, que se mueven en decorados de tamano normal.

8 Sturges, John

1911-1992

   Nacido en Oak Pak, Illinois, pasa su juventud en la sala de montaje de RKO. Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial colabora en la realizacion de documentales de propaganda y es al terminar esta cuando, contratado por Columbia, tiene la oportunidad de dirigir su primer largometraje en 1946, The Man Who Dared. En 1949 pasa a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, donde sus posibilidades de abordar proyectos mas ambiciosos aumentan. Es precisamente en los anos 50 cuando Sturges alcanza un importante prestigio como director de westerns y filmes de accion. John Sturges se muestra siempre como un realizador enormemente eficaz. Lo habia sido en sus comienzos, cuando bregaba con la dificil y formativa serie B, y lo fue mas tarde, cuando se le encomendaron proyectos mas ambiciosos y costosos. Ejemplo tipico de cineasta de genero, cuenta en su haber con un buen punado de magnificas peliculas entre las que se encuentran algunos westerns. Debo confesar una especial predileccion por La gran evasion (The Great Escape, 1963), con un reparto casi exclusivamente masculino que le otorgo, en lo sucesivo, la fama de director de hombres, y, ya dentro del western, por Fort Bravo y Duelo de titanes. En esta ultima pelicula revisa de nuevo la historia, cercana al mito, de Wyatt Earp y el celebre duelo en O.K. Corral que, entre otros, habia tratado John Ford en Pasion de los fuertes (My Darling Clementine, 1946). Sturges aborda el asunto en dos ocasiones, en la citada Duelo de titanes y, posteriormente, en La hora de las pistolas, una vi sion un tanto crepuscular del tema. Pero este filme corresponde ya a la ultima etapa creativa de Sturges, que podemos iniciar inmediatamente despues de La gran evasion, en la que recibio no pocas criticas ne gativas debido a cierto amaneramiento en la puesta en escena, que contrastaba con el vigor nada vacilante que caracterizo sus anos de plenitud.
