To jaywalk — неосторожно переходить улицу, a jay-walker — неосторожный пешеход. Слово появилось в США в начале XX в. Jay — жаргонное слово, обозначающее деревенского жителя тех времён, которому были непривычны быстрое уличное движение в больших городах и новые транспортные средства.
