Направление во внешней политике США с 20-х гг. XIX в., основанное на идее невовлечения США в вооруженные конфликты вне Американского континента и в европейские дела, провозглашенной еще в доктрине Монро [ Monroe Doctrine] (1823). Примерами изоляционизма изобилуют все периоды истории страны. Вплоть до начала XX в. изоляционизм использовался для сохранения "свободы рук" США в международных делах и доминировал во внешней политике между двумя мировыми войнами, когда США не вошли в Лигу Наций и изоляционистам удалось помешать президенту Ф. Д. Рузвельту [ Roosevelt, Franklin Delano (FDR)] создать "карантин" вокруг нацистской Германии.
